Summer 2014 is over, but watch for us next year to spend time in service to the realm!

Come join our garrison and spend your summer in service to the realm! Construct your own boffer weapons under the supervision of our master armers, and let our master armorers train you to protect yourself with steel. Further training in the other three crafts — Skills, Tactics, and Chivalry — will teach you to use your tools wisely and effectively.

Our program uses boffer swords (simple practice swords constructed from inexpensive materials like PVC pipe, foam, and duct tape) to teach kids the fundamentals of fencing, in a context consistent with medieval history, fantasy, and role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons or Skyrim. Recruits will be provided with all necessary materials to construct their own boffer weapon, a piece (or set) of protective steel armor, and another item of their choice. This camp is intended for kids 10 and older, but younger kids with strong crafting skills may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Grant Law is a Portland camp veteran, having gotten his start in Multnomah County Outdoor School in the 80's. Before earning his Ph.D. in Oceanography, and his eventual science & math teaching gig at Pacific Crest Community School, Grant worked numerous sessions of outdoor school and OMSI's marine science camps. Grant later moved to OMSI's daycamp program, which he worked for several years before moving to the coordinator position in the late 90's. Grant's style is fun, creative, and entertaining -- a sure-fire recipe for enthusiastic summer fun!

All camps are $250/week, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and will be held at Pacific Crest Community School, with frequent trips to nearby Oregon Park. Before and aftercare will also be available, 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Recruits will be given the materials and instructions to build their own arming sword, and a set of steel vambraces, and another piece of their choice. Returning recruits will be given materials to build 3 pieces of their choice.
